A Guide for TRT Self-Injection in the Glute

Testosterone Replacement Therapy is often administered via intramuscular injections, most commonly in the gluteal muscle or buttocks. This guide will prepare you to safely and effectively administer your own testosterone injection in the glute. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Wash Your Hands

When performing any health related activity, it is good practice to always wash your hands before you begin. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Now, let’s take stock of all the materials needed to perform the injection. First, open your self-injection kit and locate the pre-filled syringe. Remove the block rubber stopper at the end of the syringe. Next, you will need remove the hypodermic needle from the packaging and attach it to the syringe. Now, open the alcohol swab. While the following items may not be included in your kit, you should prepare a gauze or a cotton ball, a bandage, and lastly a sharps container to dispose of your syringe. Now we are ready to prep the injection site.

Step 2: Prepare the Injection Site

Select the outer upper quadrant of one buttock, slightly below your hip. Clean the area with the alcohol swab using circular motions, starting from the center and working outward. Allow the area to air dry before injecting in the area.

Step 3: Prepare the Medication

You should have a prepped, pre-filled syringe ready to go. Let’s check for air bubbles.

Step 4: Remove Air Bubbles

Hold the syringe with the needle pointing upward and gently tap the side to bring any air bubbles to the top. Slowly push the plunger to expel the bubbles, ensuring the correct dose remains in the syringe.

Step 5: Inject the Medication

Let’s get ready to give ourselves the shot. Get into position by standing in front of a mirror or lie on your side with the leg of the injection side slightly bent. Relax the muscle in the injection area to minimize discomfort.

Once you are ready, hold the syringe like a dart and quickly insert the needle at a 90-degree angle into the cleaned area of the gluteal muscle. Insert the needle fully, ensuring it reaches the muscle.

Inject the Testosterone:

Slowly push the plunger to inject the testosterone into the muscle. Take your time to avoid discomfort and ensure proper absorption.

Withdraw the Needle:

Once the medication is fully injected, quickly and smoothly remove the needle.

Immediately apply light pressure to the injection site with a sterile gauze or cotton ball.

Step 6: Post-Injection Care

Please note, never attempt to re-use a syringe or needle. Once you have completely injected the medicine, immediately dispose of the needle into a sharps disposal container. A sharps container can be purchased online or from a pharmacy. You can also use a hard plastic container such as a laundry detergent jug as a sharps container.

Once you have disposed of the syringe, gently massage the area to help the medication disperse and reduce soreness. If necessary, apply a bandage over the injection site.

Step 7: Alternate Injection Sites

Going forward, it is a good idea to alternate injection sites every time you administer the medication. This helps to minimize or prevent bruising or the occurrence of small nodules under the skin.
